Walmart Finally Adds Tap-to-Pay After Years of Holding Out

The retailer is beginning a nationwide rollout of contactless payments, including Apple Pay and Google Pay.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart is finally bringing Tap to Pay to its U.S. stores, giving customers the ability to pay with eligible contactless cards, phones and smartwatches.

The rollout begins August 24 at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations, with Walmart planning to expand the feature to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026.

What Walmart Is Actually Adding

The new feature is contactless payment, meaning shoppers can tap an eligible card, phone or smartwatch at a compatible checkout terminal instead of inserting or swiping a physical card.

Walmart says eligible cards can also be added to digital wallets, giving customers another way to pay at checkout.

Walmart Already Accepted Chip Cards

Despite some reports describing this as Walmart finally accepting “chip cards,” that isn't what is changing.

Walmart has accepted EMV chip cards for years. In a 2016 filing, Walmart said it already accepted many EMV cards as the industry moved toward the October 2015 liability shift for merchants that could not accept chip-card transactions.

The major change happening now is tap-to-pay — the ability to simply tap a contactless card or compatible device at checkout.

It Took About a Decade

Walmart's own mobile payment system, Walmart Pay, became available nationwide in July 2016.

That means Walmart's new Tap to Pay rollout in 2026 comes roughly 10 years after Walmart Pay reached all U.S. Walmart stores.

Walmart Pay will continue to be available alongside the new contactless payment option.

Apple Pay and Google Pay Are Coming

The new Tap to Pay system will support contactless payment methods, including Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Customers will also be able to use eligible contactless physical cards, phones and smartwatches.

Walmart says its own payment options will remain available, including Walmart Pay.

When Will Tap to Pay Be Available?

The rollout will happen in stages.

August 24, 2026: Tap to Pay begins at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations.

End of 2026: Walmart plans to have Tap to Pay available at all U.S. Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations.

Mid-2027: Walmart plans to bring the feature to its fuel stations.

Walmart Pay Isn't Going Away

Customers who prefer Walmart Pay can continue using it.

Walmart says Tap to Pay is being added as another payment option rather than replacing the company's existing payment methods.

The Bottom Line

Walmart isn't just now accepting chip cards. It is finally adding the tap-to-pay option many shoppers have been asking for.

After years of relying on Walmart Pay and traditional card insertion, Walmart is now moving toward a more familiar contactless checkout experience.
